Health Insurance

Individual and family floater policies that keep one hospital bill from undoing years of saving.

Health Insurance

What it is

Health insurance is the cover most Indian families are most short of. Medical inflation runs well ahead of general inflation, and a single admission can consume years of saving.

A family floater covers several members under one sum insured, which is usually more economical than separate individual policies. Adding a top-up or super top-up above a deductible extends the cover substantially for a modest additional premium — a structure worth understanding, because it is the cheapest way to get a large sum insured.

The details that decide whether a claim actually pays are the boring ones: room rent limits, disease sub-limits, co-payment clauses, the waiting period on pre-existing conditions, and whether the hospital you would actually use is in the network. We go through these before the premium, not after.

If you have employer cover, treat it as a supplement rather than a foundation. It ends when the job ends, and it may not follow you into the years when you need it most.

What could go wrong

  • Pre-existing conditions carry a waiting period, commonly two to four years depending on the insurer.
  • Specified illnesses and maternity typically carry their own separate waiting periods.
  • Room rent limits and sub-limits can proportionately reduce the amount actually settled on a claim.
  • Co-payment clauses mean you bear a fixed share of every claim, often on senior citizen policies.

In a metro, ₹10 lakh for a family is now a sensible floor, and many families structure ₹5 lakh base with a ₹20 lakh super top-up above it to reach a high total at a reasonable premium. In a smaller town the base figure may be lower, but the direction of medical inflation is the same everywhere.

Yes. If a bill exceeds one policy's cover, you can claim the balance from another under the contribution provisions. Tell each insurer about the other at the time of buying.

A hospital with which the insurer has an arrangement for cashless treatment, so you do not pay and then wait for reimbursement. Check that hospitals you would realistically use are on the list before you buy — the list matters more than the brochure.
